Reality Shows Mirroring Real Life

Reality shows remind me of giant sociological laboratories where people are treated like rats in mazes and bet on as to how they will react and what the outcome will be.
The worse the contestant is willing to be or do the higher the rating of the show.
Everyone has probably heard of the famous experiment where people were willing to electrocute strangers because they were given orders to do so.
For no other reason than being given an order a majority of people were more than willing to hurt someone else. I guess as long as it wasn't hurting them, they had no qualms about harming someone else. The highest level of shock was perhaps lethal they were told. It didn't matter to most.
But dysfunctional families even have their own reality programs on television.
That speaks volumes about lack of human compassion and love.
Reality shows encourage disrespect and hatred of one's neighbor .
It's all about competition even though disguised as cooperation.
One one such show "Survivor" they form alliances with one another not based on real friendship or cooperation but on the current need. The members of such alliances are all too willing to stab one another in the back when it comes their turn to make points.
I find such programs disgusting and downright evil. They encourage all the worst impulses and character traits.
I wouldn't ever want a child to see such programming.

Isn't it odd that a person is willing to be degraded for money?
Worse, they are willing to degrade someone else for money.
Maybe you think I am overboard on this. But I see some broader implications from this. I see that these programs represent what people are inside and how the nations are going. It represents a narcissistic population that are willing to sell anyone out without reservation.
I find that repulsive and scary but it's evident in the government today also.
Some are willing to pal around with terrorists and thugs in order to do what they think they have to, or to make a buck

Doesn't what happens in one area spill over into others?
Does what we stand of in entertainment speak about our values? Does it effect values?
Do these things desensitize people to bad behavior so that we begin to accept very lowered standards of right and wrong?
I think that it does do these things.
Television can mirror how things are going in a country. Hollywood has a lot of blame in this because they push things on the public.
Clothes manufacturers also force iffy adult clothing for children and pre teens to make a buck.
The advertizing makes these ugly used-clothing-store kinds of clothes appealing to kids.
But the styles are trampy and ugly for the most part.
It is their ideas foisted upon people and television programs help them push those styles.
The Disney channel has far too many kids in way too sophisticated makeup and clothing.
Hollywood needs to be sent to it's room with no supper!

hollywood tries to shape america into a mirror image of its immoral and amoral self
it has succeeded all too well up till now
Yes. Sad situation. They are the backers of the liberal Washington too. Its all intertwined
they've pushed to reshape america to be more liberal in the name of tolerance
These plotting alliances meant to hurt have always disturbed me.
Reality TV is just plain cruelty TV.
There was one show on ABC a few months ago--a search for the most beautiful person. They selected physically attractive but morally and ethically challenged contestants.
The producers set them up in situations to see which contestants acted honorably such as opening a door for someone or not picking up another patient's medical file when left alone in a doctor's office.
The contestants didn't find out the true nature of the show until after they were booted off.
But which was worse? The contestants and their behavior or the producers for setting them up and videotaping undercover?
Not an appealing show at all.
The John and Kate Plus Eight is a tragedy. So too the guy from Supernanny who was arrested for physically smacking his little two year old daughters in the mouth with the back of his hand and calling them B's.
TV needs to return to scripted shows. Personally, though, I've really fallen for the shows on PBS.
Last week they showed several programs on airplane crash survivors. Very fascinating stuff on true survivors. Believe it or not, they actually had to remain ethical and work together to survive.
I don't think you're overboard. I'm not a big fan of reality shows. I feel more embarassed, it seems, when I watch them than what those in them feel. LOL, hope that came out right. I've never seen one episode of Survivor, not to say I'm a prude. One reality show I did enjoy (if you can call it that) was "Fact or Fiction" when Jonathan Frakes was hosting it. Really good show!!!
Yes I saw a bit of the "Fact or Fiction" myself. It was interesting.

Television is nasty today. Everything has sunk so low.
It would be a nice change to see a reality show in which people must act ethically and work together to survive.
They could call it Life.
