Penalty for False Politicians?

...Is it
really
defrauding
the voters?...

Shouldn't there be a penalty or fine of some kind for a politician who pretends to be representing one party when they are clearly representing the other?
What do you think?

Major penalty. Maybe there should also be a penalty for voters who don't research the true views of the politicians they vote for.

Beth,
Absolutely. I doubt that you can penalize people for being dumb though.

If a party doesn't properly vet its own candidates, whose fault is that? This doesn't typically happen, and if the candidate has a change of heart the party can always endorse someone else. Instituting a fine for something like this would be obscene, just as it would be obscene if employers were allowed to fine employees who left their jobs.

Well, a politican's job is to represent the will of the constituents who elect them to office, not to do their own thing.
If an elected official misrepresents themselves as one thing, but is in reality another, I believe there is every reason to consider that criminal just as it is criminal to represent yourself as a policeman or as one in the military, doctor, lawyer.
These jobs have profound effects on people and are not like say working for Walmart or GM or etc.

For instance I also feel that if it is ever proven that Mr. O is not an American and knew it, he should go to jail.

You are really walking a thin line in your thinking on this. There are some clear cut cases of politicians going to jail for fraud and other matters of that nature. To say that they are "misrepresenting their party" is really more a matter of opinion than something that can be based on fact. If a politician defrauds their party, they should receive proper justice for their actions.

If all the Republican candidates suddenly switched tomorrow to start supporting abortion, gay marriage, and all the other things that belong on that list, do you not think that Democrats would pick up where they left off, and oppose all these things? This is how politics works.

More than anything, it's about developing a voting base, having a platform that works for them, and doing what it takes to get back into office. A good example of a politician doing what it takes to get re-elected is Arlen Specter, a life long Republican, switching to the Democratic party due to the fact that his voting base had changed in their demographics, as more had become Democrats.

And therein lies the filth of politics.
Politicians should serve the will of the people.
It not about political parties, its about doing what the people want according to the constitution.
Our elected officials are public servants who should serve the people above all, not some quest to stay in office no matter what.

It is sad that America has come down to this.
