This is a huge news story.
If it turns out to be permanent, it will be one of the worst disasters of our time.
The Gulf Stream has stalled.
The Gulf stream is like a literal river of warmer water that flows up from the Gulf of Mexico and along the eastern seaboard of the US and then over to Britain and up toward Ireland . It is the reason for Bermudas warm weather and palm trees in Ireland!
Without it life would become almost unlivable on the coast and in Britain, etc due to extreme cold.
The oil now on the Gulf bottom has stalled and altered the Gulf Stream . To what extent remains to be seen but it is not good.
How did it alter it? Oil and water do not mix and oil can alter the way a stream flows.
Read the story. It is scary to say the least.
Let's hope it turns out to be nothing more than a scare.
will it get cold enough to freeze the Mohammedans out of Europe?
ReplyDeletewoo hoo, it just might!!!
ReplyDeleteIf this is true, the things that people afraid of global warming have been saying will be accelerated. Of interesting note, there have been large scale crop failures in Russia and Ukraine, and in England they are experiencing a shortage of hay for their farm animals, particularly their equine animals, many of which may be hungry this winter.
ReplyDeleteAlso interesting to note, the massive fish kills that have been taking place all over, from Louisiana all the way up to Delaware and New Jersey. These have all been mysterious, and attributed to the water having incorrect levels of oxygen. The fact that no one has found evidence that it may be from the chemical dispersant used sounds a bit "fishy" to me. It's not unusual though, for the oil industry to use its deep pockets to cover up a potential disaster.
This brings about a much larger problem as well, as the world now has over 6 billion people living in it. Without the Gulf Stream maintaining the course it has followed for centuries, a very large number of people will starve. Far Northern countries that are currently inhabitable will become uninhabitable, which you've already mentioned.
I've never thought that I would see the Gulf Stream change in my lifetime, as the rate at which this should change according to models for global warming is much more gradual. If this is happening for real, it will be devastating to the population of human beings and most other mammals. This, for all we know, could be earth maintaining the environment on its own, as it has done for the entire existence of life on this planet. Which could also mean that all the release of C02, pollutants, fluorocarbons(which bond to tri-atomic oxygen, making the hole in the ozone), won't make a difference. It has already been show that reduction of these things in the atmosphere allows things to "get better" for lack of better wording. And, with a much lower number of people, things would likely fix themselves.
That paragraph sounded like it ended on a happy note, but rest assured, I see it as being a very grim possible scenario.
It hasn't stalled at all.
ReplyDeleteOceanographic satellite data shows it has
ReplyDeleteHERE
The BP Oil Spill will make as much damage to the gulf Stream as me pissing in the Atlantic.
ReplyDeleteSo you are the one pissing in the ocean Wanna? We wondered who it was.
