Austerity and Death of the Family



One would need to be asleep to avoid seeing that the family is under  attack and has been for quite sometime.     Not just in the United States either but all around the world.
Ownership and private property are also under attack.
Environment is placed before people in some instances.    False worry about population explosions fuel the fire.
The planet is huge and comparatively   little of it has been 'subdued" (Bereshit, or Genesis1).

It is not uncommon today to hear young people talk about not wanting to have children. Reproduction, a direct commandment from the Creator is very unpopular and people who have more than one or two children can often be the brunt of insults.

Smaller cars and tiny houses are in the spotlight yet again with a view to saving energy and resources, both
extremely dubious reasons.  I think the reason is an assault , conscious or not, on the family.
Small cars will not handle a family.  The new tiny houses will not accommodate family either.   Some of these new tiny homes have less than 200 square feet of living space.
Of course in today's dwindling economic climate these itty bitty homes might become a necessity.

For some time now they, whoever they are, have been promoting the idea that people are greedy, want too much, have too much and should live an austere life.  In fact, austerity in national budgets came to a head in Greece and other nations are also pushing for austerity.
The fact that nations have crippled their own economies by reducing their productivity is ignored.
You have to work hard to be prosperous.  You rarely meet a lazy rich man.

There was a time when prosperity was the key to an abundant and good life.  Now the opposite is being lauded as the key to happiness. Less kids, less home, less land, less possessions, less food, less religion and the list goes on.

 This article advertises homes built with grocery bags and tomato cans.
Most of the tiny homes are adorable  and well made. But, while cute, generally  they are not for a growing, thriving, prosperous  family life.   They represent austerity of life.
The idea of prosperity and each man living on his own property under his own 'fig tree' is being dumbed down and made to seem wrong somehow.
Man was made to live on his own plot of land, growing his own food and raising a family. But today owning acres of land is viewed as wasteful for some reason.

As China now owns the majority of American debt, their ideas on home and family are also being made more mainstream. Homes in Asia are miniscule and families very small. Though China barely uses much of its vast land it worries about over population.   Asia sees its citizens crowded into cities while tracts of land go uninhabited and undeveloped for the most part.  South America has this same problem.

People were not meant to be crowded into cities and it is a cause of mental problems according to recent studies.  People are just not meant to be squashed into tiny apartments or to live one on top of another.
As it says, "every one of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree"(Zecharia) which means private property and land for each family.
Compared to their rural counterparts, city dwellers have higher levels of anxiety and mood disorders. The schizophrenia risk of people raised in cities is almost double. Literature on the effect is so thorough that researchers say it’s not just correlation, as might be expected if anxious people preferred to live in cities. Neither is it a result of heredity. It’s a cause-and-effect relationship between environment and mind.


I wrote this article about living small a while ago.  I think the idea of living small is taking root more and more each year because of its supposed view toward supposed altruism, supposed environmental responsibility, and supposed lack of greed.  The fact that the homes are so darn cute and novel does not hurt the cause either.

While it is the world's idea of what should be, it is not the Creator's idea at all.     In fact, it is the  very opposite:

Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
so he gives to his beloved sleep.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

  1. I could not write it any better. It is definitely getting strange out there. Not only is there a push for austerity with regards to homes, family sizes, there is such a push to increase to size and strength of gov't as well as citizens dependency on it...

  2. without the family and a larger next generation, one wonders who will pay for the health care the people in these tiny homes and cars will need when they grow old? Who will take care of them?

    short term selfishness is its own punishment in the end

    Great article, expressing what many feel. The masses are to be poor, except for the ultra rich who are allowed their mansions, etc. Hypocracy?
